We just had our '50s weatherboard restumped in Ballarat and what an amazing job. Shnai is an amazing communicator and a pleasure to negotiate details with. The 2 gentlemen workers were just that - very respectful of customer and their home. Nothing was too much trouble. They even replaced the temporary cardboard barrier each day around the perimeter that we used to keep our little dogs in and brought our emptied council bins into the yard for us. The clean up after was also very thorough. When leveling they were extremely considerate to achieve the best possible balance between exact level and keeping the amount of plaster damage to a minimum. Highly competitive pricing and just an amazing experience. We give the highest recommendation possible.

Nothing but positives for these guys, Shnai and her contractors provide a second to none service with Shnai being on top of all steps of the process and answering any questions that came up. The group of guys she has working for her are phenomenal and managed to restump my entire house and level the space of a week. And it wasn't a rushed job they simply added more labour to speed up the process. If you need part or the whole of you house done I would highly recommend vic metro, being a contractor myself they provide a level of service and communication that few tradespeople could accommodate.
I can't thank the team enough for quick turn around whilst I'm preparing to renovate. Shnai was a great happy with all the recommendations provided.

Thank you for assisting us during our difficult journey. We had a water damage from our water tank which caused us a lot of issues. Shani helped us with the whole process. To the extent of liaising with our insurance company as we didn’t understand what we had to do. I can’t thank you enough! I couldn’t recommend anyone else.

What Is Underpinning and Why Is It Necessary?
Underpinning is a structural repair technique that strengthens a building’s foundation by either extending or reinforcing existing footings to reach stable ground. This process is most commonly required when a structure has experienced movement due to soil changes, moisture variation, poor original construction, or increased load from renovations or extensions.
Here in Victoria, underpinning involves the installation of deep concrete footings or reinforced steel supports that sit beneath the affected sections of a building. Once installed, the structure’s weight is permanently transferred to these new supports, thereby stopping further movement and preventing additional damage.
Underpinning may also be used to re-level parts of a home or stabilise foundations before major building works. So, if you’re in the planning phase for a local development, we’ve got a dedicated team ready to carry out underpinning work in Port Campbell.
Warning Signs Your Property May Need Underpinning
Unless you’ve dealt with this in the past, knowing when underpinning is required isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. This is often compounded by the fact that foundation movement tends to develop gradually.
However, there are many warning signs that we recommend looking out for. The most common of these include:
- Cracks appearing in walls, ceilings, or floors
- Doors and windows becoming difficult to open or close
- Uneven or sloping floors
- Gaps forming around window frames or doorways
- Cracks that worsen over time or reappear after repairs
The longer these issues are left unaddressed, the greater the chance that minor foundation movement escalates into a major structural failure.
Local Soil Conditions Affecting Your Foundation
With 86.8% of private dwellings in Port Campbell being separate houses [Source: ABS 2021 Census], the structural health of individual family homes is vital to maintaining the town’s character. The local geology presents specific challenges that generic building services simply cannot address effectively.
We understand how the coastal environment, combined with reactive clays, creates movement patterns that differ significantly from inland areas. This local knowledge enables us to design underpinning services that provide long-term stability for your property.
How the Underpinning Process Works
The Vic Metro team will provide an end-to-end service that leaves no stone unturned, and no detail missed. Here’s how our process typically plays out.
After you’ve organised a site visit, we’ll begin with a free structural assessment, where our experienced team evaluates the condition of your foundation and identifies the underlying cause of movement. This is very important as it will help us determine whether underpinning is required and, if so, what the best course of action is moving forward.
Following the assessment, we carefully develop a plan based around your property’s structure, soil conditions, load requirements, and other factors. We’ll also manage and coordinate other important processes, including engineering input, permits, and approvals.
Once the underpinning work commences, our licensed contractors will complete the works using reinforced steel and high-grade concrete. Finally, new footings are put in place to permanently support the structure, restoring stability, and preventing future movement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Underpinning in Port Campbell
We start with a free structural assessment to determine the cause and extent of foundation movement. From there, a plan is developed based on the structure, soil conditions, and load requirements. Reinforced steel or deep concrete footings are installed beneath affected areas, permanently transferring the building’s weight to stable ground and preventing further movement.
Cracks in walls or floors, uneven surfaces, doors and windows that stick, or gaps around frames are usually telltale signs the foundation needs stabilising. By reinforcing the base, these problems are prevented from returning.
Yes. Strengthening or extending footings before major building work ensures the foundation can safely support additional loads. This reduces the risk of cracks or movement once renovations or extensions are complete, giving the home long-term stability.
Underpinning requires specialised knowledge of soil behaviour, load transfer, and structural engineering. Our team focuses exclusively on underpinning, restumping, and house re-levelling. All work is carried out by licensed professionals with Master Builders Australia certification and Registered Building Practitioner credentials, so every solution is engineered correctly and built to last.
Footings installed during underpinning permanently support the home by transferring weight to stable ground beneath reactive soil layers. This stops ongoing movement, prevents cracks from recurring, and protects the structural integrity and value of the property for decades.
